Young Amateur Work group

Hoosier Young Amateur Radio Working Group meeting was held December 2, 2000 in Fishers Indiana. Special thanks to Dennis Young for arraigning the meeting location.

Committee Goals:

  • To form committees for the purpose of increasing Young peoples participation in Amateur Radio within the state of Indiana.
  • To form a committee for the Young Amateur Radio Awards to include state wide nominees.
  • To share this information with all ham clubs...

Definitions:

  • WHAT IS A YOUNG HAM: "Person Interested in Amateur Radio & 30 YEARS OR younger."
  • NEW AMATEUR: "Person Interested in Amateur Radio &  Licensed 3-YEARS OR LESS...."

It was explained by Chuck Crist, W9IH, that this work group would be functioning under the ARRL Indiana section with authority from the section manager to proceed with programs to get more young people involved in amateur radio. It will be the work groups responsibility to share
information with all Indiana ham clubs,  the Indiana Asst.Section Manager for Resources & Recruitment and the IRCC .

Terry Adams from Thomson Consumer Electronics presented information on the in school education project that TCE sponsors here in the Indianapolis area. Their program  is based on basic electronic kits and hands-on in-classroom participation.

During Terry's presentation we discovered that there is a science and technology competition in March of 2001 that our young Hams group might sponsor and use as a launching platform for the introduction of Ham radio to schools state wide.

Brief discussion ensued on the following items :

  • Make the programs:
  • Hands-on and interactive...for young people...
  • Family oriented.
  • Use retirees and older hams with daytime free schedules..
  • Suggest to state wide hams/ clubs...
  • Group recognized the need to work hand in hand with Ham radio classes and training programs.
  • Amateur Radio's best selling point is the resume credit and the life experiences offered.
  • Include the home schooling programs.
  • reach out to schools....Tech prep/ed programs
  • Scouting programs.
  • Have short contests (the crayon color)
  • Kits and build programs around them.
  • Organize Indiana state ham efforts for national KIDs day events
  •  (twice a Year)
  •   Jan & Sept...Arrl info , QST dec 2000, page 45...
  •   Steve Wendt, KB9RDS ...agreed to lead this project....
