COMMENTS:

Well June is here and there is a lot going on. But first I want to
welcome Jerry Boling KC6OND the new EC for Vigo Co and Gary Adams
W9EEU the new EC for Clay Co. David Pifer N9YNF is now a full time DEC
for District 07.

The National Weather Service in INDIANAPOLIS would like to thank all
spotters, amateur radio operators, law enforcement officials, and
broadcasters for their informative and timely reports of severe
weather. A National Weather Service storm survey determined a tornado
touched down in Marion Co Friday night and continued southeast into
Hancock Co. The tornado was rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. A
National Weather Service storm survey also determined that a tornado
touched down in northwestern Hancock Co. The tornado was rated EF-1. A
third tornado occurred in Carroll Co and was rated EF-0. On Tuesday
6/3 one tornado occurred near Waverly in Morgan Co and has been rated
EF-0. Another tornado occurred in Lawrence Co. Northern Indiana also
had a few tornadoes in May. Two brief touchdowns in Wabash Co Indiana
and one touchdown along the state line in Adams Co Indiana into Van
Wert Co Ohio on May 30th.

June is Ham Radio Month and across the state mayors will be declaring
June 23 - 29 Amateur Radio Week for local radio groups. The Governor
of the State of Indiana will declare (hopefully) June 23 - 29 "Amateur
Radio Week" to commemorate 101 years of public service by "ham" radio
operators. This isn't just in Indiana but across the United States.
Fields Day might not seem to be a big thing but it really is. It is a
great way to show off to local governments and the public what ham
radio can do. It has been a great success in the past with many local
agencies jumping on board with ham radio. So no matter what you do or
what the weather is (It rained last year), remember you are not the
only one having fun your just one of many. Below is a current list of
groups that have already listed field day activates with the ARRL as
of 6/5/08.

SEC REPORT FOR JUNE 2005 (INDIANA)

One issue that I have noted that there is a lot of confusion or
interpretations of how events are logged on the report. The biggest
example is Skywarn Activities and the under standing of what a Public
service event is. While all activities including emergency operations
are a "public service" they have specific filing locations on the
current form FSD-212 based on the actual event. To the best of my
ability and in consultation with the ARRL here is how the figures
should be entered on the form.

Local Net Name and Number of Sessions: This should reflect your local
net operations that are regular nets. For example if you or your ARES
team manages / hosts a net that meets every Sunday at 1320UTC and there
is 4 sundays in a month, you would report the net name and 4 Sessions
here. Do not count special or ad-hoc nets such as skywarn here.

Drills: This should reflect the number of sessions of your regular net
and any training exercises that your group participated in this for the
month. This would include Table Top and Mock Disaster Exercises for
example. Additionally if you had a training session for the ARES
personnel you would include this here. Some training examples are
Weather Spotting, Red Cross Procedures, NTS message handling and so
forth. Also if you as the EC or your team spent time in planning
meetings for events.

Public Service Events: This is centered around reporting events such
as Parades, Festivals, Public Displays, Marathons, Walks, Triathlons
and so forth.

Emergency Operations: This is where to report any active events that
were participated in were actual or potential loss of life or damage to
property occurred. This includes Skywarn Nets, Red Cross disaster
Operations, Search and Rescue operations, Flood Monitoring, etc.

Additionally the Person-Hours should reflect, to the best of your
ability, the total person time spent in support of the event. This can
be done very simply. For example if you have a 30 minute net with 25
checkins, you would multiply the number of minutes by the number of
checkins and then divide by 60 to convert to hours (30X25)/60 or 12.5
Person Hours. This assumes everyone was in the net and participating
the entire time. If you attend a planning meeting for 2 hours, you
would report 2 person hours for that event.

When you total out the report use the figures for Drills, Public
Service Events and Emergency Operations for the period.

As complicated or as cumbersome as this appears, these numbers are
used by the ARRL to help demonstrate the activity and justify Amateur
Radio to various Government and private organizations. The more data we
have the better. Regardless of how active you ARES group is please fill
out the report.

Simulated Emergency Test is coming up soon. While no specific plans
have yet been made for this year at the Section Level. You need to
start planning for it now. The Official SET weekend is October 1,2 but
you may hold your SET any time between September 1 and November 30 to
tie into you local served agencies.

So that I still have something to talk about at the Indianapolis
Hamfest, I better stop here. Until next month.
