MORE COMMENTS

WA0JTL Hamilton Co: Hams assisted with the HC EMA information booth at the HC 4H Fair. Hamilton Co hams participated in the IDHS State Test on July 17 with a local net and checkins with W9SEM with reports.

KB9RVB Monroe Co: ARES-RACES participated in the statewide RACES test, checking in 18 operators. RACES reported to the state on W9WIN and through the EMA's WebEOC utility with the County EM Director. ARES EC KB9RVB participated with EMA and Red Cross in a planning session to set up protocols for notification of volunteer communications needs and for creating training opportunities for disaster assessment for each entity. EC also participated in the monthly Red Cross Emergency Services meeting. Monroe County ARES-RACES continued to assist with recruiting for the Red Eye Relay which became a Bloomington ARC-supported event this summer but which continues to provide an opportunity for emergency communications training. Emergency committee member KC9EVU met with EC KB9RVB and assistant ECs KB9UVW and KB9RNB to discuss net operations training as well as to plan training on Olivia for more operators.
EC KB9RVB and assistant ECs KB9UVW and KB9RNB met with KB9LGS to assist with planning the location for 2011 Field Day. BARC and IUARC have expressed interest in varying the location. Monroe County ARES-RACES congratulates out-going Marion County ARES EC N9FEB for his outstanding service to amateur radio. His assistance with Monroe County training activities over the years has been valued and helpful. Stay in touch with us southerners, Mike!

W9WXN Harrison Co: We activated Skywarn nets twice this month. We held four regular nets. We participated in RACES statewide drill. Held ARES quarterly meeting to discuss simulated emergency test coming up in October.

KC9IIS Clinton Co: Last month Clinton County ARES spent the week of July 11-17 at the Clinton County Fair. We had a nice booth explaining what we were all about. We talked to many people over the course of the week that was interested in Ham Radio. We handed out many brochures and had a 40 Meter HF station running along with a 2 Meters running on one of the Indy repeaters. We signed up enough people to hold a Tech class in the county coming up in August.

WY9L Ripley County: ARES has become affiliated with the Ripley County Amateur Radio Club (RCARC). We will be applying for 501(C) 3 non profit status soon so we can apply for grants. The only training we have coming up is a 911 map reading class & then the annual SET for ARES in October.

N9LRO Howard Co: RACES/ARES members assisted Howard County EMA with dispatch activities at the Howard County 4-H Fair. We conducted 2 severe weather nets during the month. We also completed installation of a beam at the EOC to facilitate Packet communications with the State EOC.

AB9SO Adam Co: We completed a new Ham Tech class this month. We then sponsored a test session at Swiss Days in Berne with 3 students getting their Tech license. We also setup a display booth, in conjunction with our county EMA group and CERT team, at the county 4H fair. We passed out fliers on Ham radio and ARES as well as gave away 5 weather radios donated by our EMA office.

KC9CDS Elkhart Co: We provided communications for the Elkhart County 4H Fair Parade again this year. We had 11 operators stationed along the parade route.

K9RFZ Allen Co: ARES supported the monthly DHS Tornado Siren test by monitoring our 5 assigned locations. We completed the final ARES/RACES training module as ARES EC K9RFZ presented the unit on personal emergency preparedness. Assistant EC KB9WWM also presented an overview of the newly formed digital operation team. Workshops and hands on training sessions will be scheduled in the next couple of months for interested members. The training will concentrate on developing proficiency in VHF packet operation and HF PSK31 mode initially. Digital mode traffic handling will be emphasized in the training with the goal of building a team of operators with portable digital mode stations that can be deployed to served agencies and area hospitals to speed up traffic handling between locations with the most critical formal traffic needs.

N9BEC Boone Co: ARES members were requested to assist again this year with July 4th parade and we had 3 severe weather nets this month...We are getting ready to start another TECH class the 14th of September for more info go to www.bcara.

Exerpt From
SEC REPORT FOR JUNE 2005 (INDIANA)

One issue that I have noted that there is a lot of confusion or
interpretations of how events are logged on the report. The biggest
example is Skywarn Activities and the under standing of what a Public
service event is. While all activities including emergency operations
are a "public service" they have specific filing locations on the
current form FSD-212 based on the actual event. To the best of my
ability and in consultation with the ARRL here is how the figures
should be entered on the form.

Local Net Name and Number of Sessions: This should reflect your local
net operations that are regular nets. For example if you or your ARES
team manages / hosts a net that meets every Sunday at 1320UTC and there
is 4 sundays in a month, you would report the net name and 4 Sessions
here. Do not count special or ad-hoc nets such as skywarn here.

Drills: This should reflect the number of sessions of your regular net
and any training exercises that your group participated in this for the
month. This would include Table Top and Mock Disaster Exercises for
example. Additionally if you had a training session for the ARES
personnel you would include this here. Some training examples are
Weather Spotting, Red Cross Procedures, NTS message handling and so
forth. Also if you as the EC or your team spent time in planning
meetings for events.

Public Service Events: This is centered around reporting events such
as Parades, Festivals, Public Displays, Marathons, Walks, Triathlons
and so forth.

Emergency Operations: This is where to report any active events that
were participated in were actual or potential loss of life or damage to
property occurred. This includes Skywarn Nets, Red Cross disaster
Operations, Search and Rescue operations, Flood Monitoring, etc.

Additionally the Person-Hours should reflect, to the best of your
ability, the total person time spent in support of the event. This can
be done very simply. For example if you have a 30 minute net with 25
checkins, you would multiply the number of minutes by the number of
checkins and then divide by 60 to convert to hours (30X25)/60 or 12.5
Person Hours. This assumes everyone was in the net and participating
the entire time. If you attend a planning meeting for 2 hours, you
would report 2 person hours for that event.

When you total out the report use the figures for Drills, Public
Service Events and Emergency Operations for the period.

As complicated or as cumbersome as this appears, these numbers are
used by the ARRL to help demonstrate the activity and justify Amateur
Radio to various Government and private organizations. The more data we
have the better. Regardless of how active you ARES group is please fill
out the report.

Simulated Emergency Test is coming up soon. While no specific plans
have yet been made for this year at the Section Level. You need to
start planning for it now. The Official SET weekend is October 1,2 but
you may hold your SET any time between September 1 and November 30 to
tie into you local served agencies.

So that I still have something to talk about at the Indianapolis
Hamfest, I better stop here. Until next month.

73,
