2008 IRCC TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD During the time the Hoosier DX & Contest Club has known Dave, he has provided Technical Leadership and Excellence in the field of Amateur Radio. Daves first love started in the area of Contesting back in the 1970s. He built one, if not the best, Multi-Multi stations here in the Midwest and everything was designed or modified and built by him and a small group of friends. Before the age of PacketCluster, ARCluster, & DXSpider, Dave was instrumental in getting a VHF network of hams passing around DX spots by voice and passing this information on to the operators at his QTH in the Multi-Multi. Dave continued to pioneer the use of programmable calculators and early PCs for use in Contesting. He provided input into early logging programs (CT) and stays active in what are now the main stream Contest Logging programs (WINTEST, Writelog, N1MM, etc). He has worked on numerous projects and has mentored a number of hams with his knowledge of radio and electronics. With the invention of the TNC in the mid 1980s, Dave was the first major player in setting up a Packet Network for use with DX Spotting. He headed all the projects to coordinate the use of frequencies and equipment to make sure the Midwest had a robust PacketCluster network. Dave helped build and maintain the 1st and probably the largest network of PacketCluster Nodes in the USA. He managed this network until it was evident the internet would be the next network to tackle. Sure there were others that put in significant time and effort into this area, but Dave was the main force in making sure it happened and was robust. Now with the internet in place, Dave is utilizing this technology to manage (SYSOP) a large number of AR-Clusters in the USA. He has always been a person that pays attention to detail and leaves no loose ends when projects are being worked. |
